Last week, on the first ride for Kuroko since I started a sweeping round of maintenance in July, I thought the gears were making a bit of noise and the shifting was somewhat sluggish. I was nearly home before I discovered the issue: I’d routed the chain improperly through the rear derailleur cage.
With rain all through this weekend, I had a good chance to take care of this and get the bike back in tip-top shape.
It was a bit too rainy and cold yesterday, and difficult for me to find motivation. This afternoon, upon returning from lunch I noticed that the rain had lifted and the temperature had risen a few degrees. Right, no more excuses.

It took me longer to locate the quick link (it’s showing in the left photo above at the bottom left of the tension pulley) than to separate it with the link tool. With the chain off, I cleaned up the derailleur cage a bit with a brush and then started the tedious process of threading the chain back in place — taking care this time to route it inside the tab of the cage. And then checking twice again before finishing the job with a new quick link.
Job done, I ran through all the gears a few times. In the stand, it’s quiet and the shifting is smooth, as I have come to expect.
