Third time lucky

Today was my third try at sorting Kuroko’s front brake. After yesterday’s discovery of an unfinished casting mark (at a guess), I knew what was required: grind down the excess material and reverse the mounting bracket on the caliper.

It took longer to get out the Dremel and extension cord and fit the grinding wheel than it did to grind off the protruding bit. I spent a few dozen seconds trying to make the result as smooth as possible, but there’s still just a bit of an edge there.

Removing and reversing the caliper mounting bracket was more fiddly than anything else. One of the two attachment screws was rather tight, and the working conditions were a bit cramped: crouched down and limited by the length of the hydraulic line. But the result was never in doubt.

Anticlimactic

With the caliper correctly mounted now it was a matter of a minute to reinsert the brake pads and then mount the wheel. I spent a couple of minutes aligning the caliper. In the end there was just a bit of friction that I hope will come out in the first ride or two. Meanwhile the stopping power is sufficient.

It’s only been … two months?

The forecast is promising for a ride tomorrow, the first on Kuroko in more than two months. Today’s maintenance work went smoothly — over in 30 minutes including the cleaning up. I’m happy to report too that the tubeless front tire is holding air very well now. If all this parlays into an anticlimactic ride tomorrow, I’ll be happy.
