Today marked my second attempt to replace the front caliper for Kuroko following the hack job to unscrew the rounded bleed screw. I had no trouble returning the faulty caliper I’d installed a couple of weekends ago, and I received the replacement today, a day sooner than expected.

Installing the new caliper and bleeding the brake didn’t present any specific challenges, apart from me being fumble-fingered and forgetting where I’d put a tool the moment I’d set it down. I had to pull the brake line as far as I could to get the barb setting tool on it, after cutting off the old one. If I have to do this again I’ll need to run a new brake line.

With the bleeding done, I put the wheel in the fork and pumped the brake to draw the pads in. When I gave the wheel another spin, though, there was a pinging sound, almost like a spoke was striking something. I inspected the wheel closely: not striking anything. With a shrug I removed the wheel again and then I noticed it: a small bit of metal sticking out from the inner surface of the caliper, obviously overlooked in the manufacturing process.
While I had the wheel in I also noticed the brake pads were only touching the very edge of the rotor. The second photo above shows why: I need to reverse the mounting bracket.
Tomorrow’s another day
Rain again in the forecast for tomorrow. I should have no trouble removing the little bit of metal left over from the casting (I’m assuming) and reversing the mounting plate. Fingers crossed, because the forecast for Friday is good, and I’ve got other plans for the weekend.
