Disassemble!

Hornsby will have 650B rims with disc brakes, vs. the 26-inch, rim brake wheels used on Dionysus. The hubs on the bike were intended for discs, so I’ll reuse those, but everything else has to go.

I’d already removed the tires, tubes and rim strips, so it was just a matter of taking a spoke wrench and nipple driver to each nipple in turn, 32 for each wheel. I’d cleaned both rims before starting, but not the spokes and nipples, and my hands were quickly blackened with road grime as I progressed.

For the rear I had to remove the cogs before proceeding. These are due for replacement, so the old cogs went in the bin.

After disassembling each wheel I gave the hub a quick cleaning. I’m going to do a full tear-down, cleaning and re-greasing, but I need another wrench for that. (I’ve got two 17mm wrenches, and I need one 17mm and one 15mm.)

Meanwhile I measured the spokes, and they’re within a millimeter or two of the new ones for Hornsby. But there’s another important difference, so for now these spokes will go in the spares pile (along with the 26-inch rims).

It isn’t too terribly long since I built these wheels in the first place.

Update

The winning combination proved to be 1 x 17mm plus 1 x 13mm (front) and 1 x 17mm plus 1 x 15mm (rear). The next post will (probably) be the hub maintenance.
